"R" is for Rachel ⋆ A Decade of Sentimental Meaning
On my 16th birthday, I received a pair of pink UGGS, black UGGS, and a diamond "R" necklace. Clearly, my UGG obsession was pretty serious circa 2008, and I am happy to say that it has long subsided.
In the past decade, I have changed in so many ways and many of my possessions have been sold, donated or outgrown but the “R” necklace has remained a constant.
2008 was undoubtedly a tougher year for my family. Looking back, I’m struck by the generosity that I received for my Birthday. The economic crash mounted stress as losing hard earned money became eminent. I accepted the R necklace as a blanket of security that things would be and were okay.
A couple years later, in 2010 I was still rockin’ the R necklace as I walked across the stage to receive my diploma from high school. Later, the same day, I was showered with love and congratulations as friends and family celebrated my graduation and acceptance to college. By the end of the night, my “R” necklace hung buried beneath my new maroon hoodie with "ROANOKE COLLEGE" embroidered across the front.
In 2013, as my college career came to a close, I started my ideal internship helping to execute weddings, rehearsal dinners and events across Cape Cod. The “R” necklace dangled around my neck, tucked beneath my work uniform - a heavyweight navy blue polo. I spent Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays that summer setting up. From a full install for a rehearsal dinner at the Ocean House Restaurant in Dennis Port (back when they had a tent), following floor plans at Chatham Bars Inn as Tent Weddings were erected on the Front Lawn, and placing garden chairs in rows for ceremonies on Wequassett’s oceanfront lawn.
Now, 2018 and it still remains clasped around my neck. I wear it naturally as I embark on a new, independent journey as an event planner and stylist. It’s presence has transcended phases and with each chapter refreshed meanings were applied. From a piece that stood for security, celebration, achievements and now - adventure.
On my most recent trip to Southwest Florida my dad asked, “Is that the “R” necklace I gave you? Who knew it would be such a hit?” I responded, “Yeah, it’s going a decade strong.”
With all the sentimentality, love and perseverance it represents, after ten whole years, I have a feeling it’s - timeless.
What is something that has long carried sentimentality in your life? I'd love to know, I'm sure it shares a lot about who you are and the person you have become today.
